Week 1 Betting Card: Nebraska-Ohio, Then the Rest of the Big Ten

Numbers as of Monday. They will move. This is a handicap, not a recommendation to bet the house!

Nebraska is -24.5. Total is 47.5. Moneyline is roughly -2800 / +1300. Kickoff Saturday, 11 a.m. CT, FS1.

The public is already camping on Ohio plus the points. That is the tell. Everybody remembers the ugly openers. Everybody remembers 17-10 in Frisco, when this same Ohio staff beat Colandrea’s UNLV team. The number moved from -23.5 to -24.5 anyway. The market still thinks Nebraska is a three-score team at home. The tickets are betting the Huskers look ordinary.

Nebraska-Ohio card

Spread: lean Nebraska -24.5, but it is not a hammer

A clean game is 34-10, 31-7, something that covers without needing a garbage-time prayer. A sloppy game is 27-17 and you spent three hours watching starters in the fourth quarter. If you need the Huskers to look different, you are on the favorite. If you think Week 1 rust and a new 4-2-5 add up to one sloppy half, you are on Ohio +24.5 with the public.

Projected score: Nebraska 34, Ohio 10. That covers. It also stays under the total.

Total: Under 47.5

Ohio’s quarterback completed 45 percent of his passes last time we had a real sample. Nebraska’s new defense is built to fit the run and keep Poulos in the pocket. If this gets to 50, someone lost contain or Colandrea is throwing it around in a track meet. More likely it is a 34-10 game that never threatens 48.

Colandrea rushing: Over 31.5

That number is the one that makes sense. He ran for 649 yards last year. Ohio already saw him scramble in the bowl. Rhule wants a quarterback who can leave the pocket on purpose. He does not need 80 yards. He needs designed keepers and the third-and-6 that Poulos used to pick up. Over 31.5 is the “he is actually the quarterback they signed” bet. Under is the “Holgorsen keeps him in the shotgun and hands it off 40 times” bet. Lean over.

Colandrea passing: Under 239.5 if you need a second prop

They should run it. Ohio will load the box and dare him to beat them on schedule. He can. He does not have to put up 280 to win.

First touchdown scorer

There is no Emmett Johnson. That makes this a committee dart.

Isaiah Mozee if he gets the first series

Mekhi Nelson if they want the hammer near the goal line

Jacory Barney from the slot on an early scripted shot

Colandrea himself if the first red-zone play is a keeper

Lean Mozee as the chalk and Barney if you want a price. Do not overthink an Ohio defender. Nebraska should score first.

Cover / don’t cover, plain English

Cover if the first 15 plays look like a Big Ten team. Don’t cover if it is 14-10 at half and Poulos has two third-down scrambles. The number is fair. The better side is still Nebraska. The profitable side might be whoever is fading the public on plus-24.5 if you think Lincoln is going to be sloppy at noon.

Minus 24.5 is three scores. That is a big ask in Week 1. It is also what a 34-10 afternoon looks like if the backups are in and nobody is throwing it around.

Rest of the Big Ten, Week 1

One card if you only want a few

Nebraska -24.5 (small)

Under 47.5

Colandrea over 31.5 rushing

Michigan State-Toledo: Toledo +10

Northwestern-SDSU: SDSU +12.5

Week 1 Big Ten football is mostly favorites beating people they are supposed to beat. The money is in which three-score favorite looks bored, and which 10-point favorite is not as good as the logo. Nebraska is the first test of that. If they cover, the “look different” talk survives the weekend. If they do not, the 6.5 win total starts to feel heavy before the Big Ten schedule even starts.
